Re-think Shared Hosted Desktops with DaaS

It’s widely understood that for on-premises deployments: $TCO of Shared Hosted Desktops < $TCO of Non-Persistent Desktops < $TCO of Persistent Desktops.

However, we are seeing customers approach this problem very differently with DaaS, driven by security and management reasons, and surprisingly the cost equation is also disrupted.

Security of Desktop is Better than Shared Hosted Desktops
Many call center customers have been bitten by ransomware with their on-premises shared hosted desktop deployments. They attribute this to the lack of good security software for a server environment, and the inability to protect sessions inside the server. They want to go to a more standard desktop environment where they can fully leverage the security tools available on a PC.

Use Standard Image Management Tools for Persistent Desktops
Some customers are going away from non-persistent desktops toward persistent desktops because they can manage the persistent desktops with their PC image management tools like Intune or SCCM.

Surprise: TCO of Non-Persistent and Persistent Desktops is Significantly Better with DaaS
Since infrastructure is static on-premises and provisioned for peak usage, you cannot optimize cost very much. But with DaaS,  you can optimize for each user with a desktop, whereas you have to optimize for infrastructure for shared hosted desktops. So if a user uses their desktop for an hour a day, you can pay $.30 per hour for a large non-persistent desktop. With a shared hosted desktop, you can turn off the server only when all users are logged off.

It’s time to re-think shared hosted desktops with DaaS!
